To keep me mindful of my higher calling, I ask myself the questions: ‘Who am I?’ ‘Why am I here?’ ‘What is my task?’ and ‘Am I getting it done?’ In my answers, I find the best of myself and the gifts God gave me.
Stephen (and by extension ‘reward, honor, renown, fame’, often given as a title rather than as a name; c. AD 5 – c. 34) is traditionally venerated as the protomartyr or first martyr of Christianity. According to the Acts of the Apostles, he was a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem who angered members of various synagogues by his teachings. Accused of blasphemy at his trial, he made a speech denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgment on him and was then stoned to death. Saul of Tarsus, later known as Paul the Apostle, a Pharisee and Roman citizen who would later become an apostle, participated in Stephen’s execution.
I wanted to tell you of his higher calling and belief.
“And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
